Aipan is an established-ritualistic folk art
originating from Kumaon in the Indian Himalayas. The art which was once done
mainly during special occasions, household ceremonies and rituals, has now been
contemporised by modern Aipan artists into daily use and luxury products. The
actual art was done with a white paste made of rice flour on empty, brick-red
walls. At present, a variety of colours and pigments are used to represent the
art through the medium of a variety of objects.
